Clara Sue Bridges entered heaven on February 21, 2021, from Hospice at Wendover, where she resided for the past 9 months. Following the untimely death of her father in 1978, Sue was a constant companion, co-worker and mutual care giver to her mother, Lillian Bridges, living with her at home until 2016, when they moved together to Carillon Assisted Living (now Elmcroft) in Shelby. She was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church, where she helped in the nursery for many years. Sue was happiest when she was worshiping in church, caring for children, and taking photos of family and friends. She always had a smile and a hug for everyone, ending most conversations by saying "I love you and I am praying for you." No one ever doubted those words. During recent months, she especially loved and appreciated her care givers at Elmcroft, her fellow residents there and more recently her "angels" at Hospice.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lillian Bridges and is survived by two brothers and sisters in law, James Bridges and wife Linda Deaton Bridges, Don Bridges and wife, Kathryn Bowling Bridges, nieces and nephews, Marina Bridges and Barry Bridges, of Charlotte, Laura Wease Hester and husband, Eric Hester of High Shoals, Jonathan Bridges and wife, Farah, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Kate Bridges of Nashville, Tennessee, Forrest Bridges, of Dallas, Texas, and grand nieces and nephews, Layne Hester and Layton Hester, Layla Jean Bridges and James Amin Bridges.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, at 11:00 AM at Union Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Shumate officiating.

Memorials may be made to Union Baptist Church, 3800 Polkville Road, Shelby, NC 28150 and to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Some of my earliest memories are of spending Saturdays with Grandma and Sue. I may have been the only little boy in town who went to the hairdresser every weekend, but I didn't care because Sue always made me feel special and I loved seeing how getting her hair done made her feel special. I can't think of anyone else who loved as unconditionally as Aunt Sue. Whatever the situation, you could count on Sue giving you a big hug and kiss saying that she had been praying for you. And there was no doubt that she had. Sue was in constant communication with Jesus, and her life reflected that love and humility. I love you Aunt Sue, and I will miss you.

Everyone’s world was better for having Sue in it. She was the most sincere and genuine person I have ever known. She was so loving and saw the best parts of each person she met; at times seeing qualities unnoticed by other people, I am sure. One of the best gifts she gave us was her constant capturing of the world through her point of view. We are lucky to have thousands of Polaroid pictures Sue took throughout her life- pictures of the many, many people she loved and the places she was excited to visit. I hope I can always feel Sue’s tight hugs and kisses on my face. We are so lucky to have experienced her love and give her love in return.
