Obituary for Roger Hoyle

Claude Roger Hoyle, 90, of Belwood, NC passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022 at Carolina Care Health and Rehabilitation in Cherryville, NC.

Born in Fallston, NC on May 28, 1932 to the late Miles Fred Hoyle and Edith Inez Murray Hoyle, he was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Caroleen Walters-McCall Hoyle and his siblings, Everette “Speedy” Hoyle, M. F. Hoyle Jr., Sally Pearson, David Hoyle, Edith Hoyle and Julius Hoyle.

He is survived by his children Tom (Candy) McCall of Burlington, NC; Rick (Andrea) McCall of Huntersville, NC; Ann (Patrick) Moore of Wilmington, NC; Bob (Sandra) McCall of Tryon, NC, and his grandchildren Collins Mabry (Chris); Cole Moore; Caelum McCall; and great-grandchild Haley, Phoenix and Cameron. He is also survived by his loving companion of the last 12 years, Jane Adams of Cherryville, NC, and her children Sheila (Scott), Debra, and Juanita who provided care and support. Roger has numerous nieces and nephews across the country.

He graduated from Fallston High School and was a starter for the famous, Fallston “Flying Five,” coached by local legend and long-time friend, Blaine Baxter. Their team had a two-year streak in which they lost only one game, led by Roger’s signature hook shot, and they were the recipients of many trophies and awards. He later attended Brevard College and played basketball there as well. After returning home, Roger entered the US Army at Fort Benning, Ga., and was stationed in Japan at Camp Kokura during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge from active duty, he entered the Army Reserve. Upon returning home, he worked for his brother, Everette “Speedy” Hoyle, at Hoyle Plumbing Company in Shelby for almost twenty years, overseeing plumbing projects for houses, schools and libraries all over the area, from Shelby to Gastonia. On November 23, 1966, he married Caroleen McCall and her four children. He was a wonderful father to their four children for 56 years. In 1976, he received his plumbing license and started his own plumbing business, C. Roger Plumbing Co., which he owned and operated for 30 years. He was esteemed greatly by those in the community for his kindness and care, and his talent as a plumber meant that he often received calls for his services well after he officially retired, even into his mid-eighties. He was a gifted gardener, builder and baker, and showered his children and grandchildren and his great-grandchildren with his love and generosity. He will never be forgotten by those who were lucky enough to know him.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, August 8 at 11am at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Fallston. The family will receive guests at the graveside. Masks are requested.
