Obituary for David Richard Mellon

David Richard Mellon of Shelby, NC, went to his eternal home on Wednesday, March 1, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Shelby, NC on December 31, 1946. David was the son of Eddie and Texie Mellon.

Along with his parents, David was predeceased by four brothers, six sisters and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Burin and Blanch Peeler. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Brenda, his sons Byron Mellon (Darla), Brent Mellon (Jessica), three grandchildren, Tyler Mellon (Cori), Ashley Mellon, and Briley Mellon and one sister. He is also survived by one great granddaughter, Nora Rose Mellon and sister-in-law Mary Frye (Ken).

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he enjoyed his family and spending time with them. He was a coach for PeeWee football and basketball and loved watching his sons and grandchildren play sports. David was always at every game and was a strong supporter in everything they did whether academic or sports-related. He was employed by Celanese for 30 years before his retirement. He loved to travel and enjoyed spending every summer vacation in Lake Waccamaw, NC. David also enjoyed westerns, NASCAR racing and Diet Mountain Dew. He loved taking care of animals – especially his “granddog” Bo.

David loved the Lord and spent time daily in God’s word. He enjoyed spending time with his wife Brenda. He treasured their daily Bible study. He was a member of Pleasant City Church and was involved with the SWAT group (Seniors with a Testimony), Connection Group- Pairs and Spares, coffee greeting committee and loved working as a security guard at Vacation Bible School. He enjoyed waving at the kids every day and eating all the VBS snacks.

The family will receive friends prior at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home on Saturday from 1:00 PM on 2:00 PM. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday at 2:00 pm in the Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bryan Glisson and Rev. Gary Marburger officiating. Graveside services will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park.
