She was preceded in death by her husband William Andrew Powell and brothers B.P. Peeler Jr. of Belwood, North Carolina and Dr. Lackey B Peeler of Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the recipient of the NC Technology Administrator of the Year Award along with the Administrator of the Year-NVAEOP. Ellen was also chosen as a Distinguished Woman of Cleveland County in 1992. Although she accomplished much in her professional life, she was most proud of her family. The epitome of grace and kindness, she found joy in each day as it came.

Ellen was a member of Kadesh United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to thank her caregivers and the kind nurses of Atrium Health for the excellent care she received.

Andy, Debbie and family,
My sincere sympathy on the loss of this special lady. I knew her all my life. She and Bill often had dinner with my parents, she was my teacher and basketball coach. Later in my life we were co-workers at Cleveland County Schools, and then she became my boss as Superintendent of our school system. So many memories! Ellen was a fair and honest person, and a true lady. I would not even try to guess the number of lives she touched. May all your memories bring you comfort and may you be secure in the knowledge that you cared for her so well as her health declined. Blessings to all.

Our deepest heartfelt sympathies go to the entire family.
Mrs. Powell as I knew was the best teacher I ever had. She showed us so much in science class that it was then I got my love for science. I remembered the night we laid under the stars and learned so much about the stars & the universe . She always went the extra mile for her students. She will be missed.

My sincere sympathy with the loss of your loved one.

Mrs. Powell was my Algebra teacher at Piedmont School. Her kindness helping some of us that was having a hard time with this subject was so helpful.

She was a sweet lady and know she will be missed by all who knew her. Praying for her family.

To Andy and family,
Your mom, grandmother, great grandmother was one of the most beautiful people (inside and out) in the Upper Cleveland area.
I knew her when I worked at Township Three School. She helped me with a project that I was having trouble with. It worked out just as she said it would. She was one of a kind, always pleasant, always had a smile, and always willing to go the extra mile for anyone. She made a difference. She will surely be missed.
Love and Prayers,
Jack and Jo McNeilly
