Vera Boyles Crotts, 92, of Belwood, NC, passed away Sunday March 28, 2021, at Wendover Hospice House, Shelby, NC.

Vera was born in Belwood, on September 26, 1928, to Ambrose G. Boyles and Mittie Norman Boyles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clyde R Crotts, and her sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Lon A Canipe, Jr.

She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Judy Crotts of Shelby, Tim and Nancy Crotts of Lawndale, Milton and Joanne Crotts of Asheville; granddaughters Carla Crotts, April Crotts, Jillian Crotts; and great-grandson Mason Cline.

A beautician for over 62 years, Vera treated the clients who came to her home shop like extended family. She loved to sew her own clothes and often tailored clothing for others, including her customers. Her talents ranged from knitting, tatting, quilting, and crochet to gardening, which was her passion. She took pride in her bountiful garden – not only dazzling flowers, but abundant fruits and vegetables, which she preserved to share with family and neighbors.

Resourceful and determined, Vera enjoyed music, dance, and traveling the world. Germany to Guam, Australia to Alaska, Honolulu to the Holy Land, she ventured far from Belwood, always returning to her home, her family, and the traditions she shared with those she leaves behind. Her greatest love and joy were her three sons, who will miss her dearly.

Vera was a lifelong member of St. Peters United Methodist Church, where a graveside service will be held this Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 3:00pm with the Rev. Brian Elwell officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Peters United Methodist Church, c/o Gary Tillman, 5701 Fallston Road, Lawndale, NC 28090, or to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, NC 28150.

I took a screening position with Cleveland Pines after Covid hit our Nation last year. It would be a second job for me and I was excited to start. Never thinking that I would form such a friendship with Miss Vera and some of the other residents there. She would come to the front on the days that I worked and talk to me about her life and her boys. I looked forward to seeing her each day upon my arrival. She would usually be waiting for me in the hall. It was amazing to me, as I listened to her stories, at what an extraordinary person she was. I remember talking about her beautiful hair and she let me know that she wouldn't let just anyone fool with her hair. She did let me wash it one night...I got more water on the two of us and the floor than on her head. We both laughed out loud! As I looked at her, I could see in her eyes the person she once was and is. I would try to imagine what she must have been like and looked like in her younger days in the things she said and the places she went. Pizza...she loved pizza! We always enjoyed having pizza delivered and talking about old times. What started as just a job to me soon became so much more. I will miss you Vera very much. You will never know the level of joy that you brought to my life. Be looking for me!

Love you always,
Lisa Spearman

To Tim and the entire Crotts family:
So sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was obviously a wonderful Christian woman who lived a full and memorable life. I know she had to be very proud of her sons and grandchildren. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
